World Holidays: Tu Bishvat A Celebration of the Environment and God

Today January 31 marks the 2018 Tu BiShvat; a holiday celebrating the connection to the environment and the Creator; God. God created environment for people to use.

The Facts are Clear, if we keep at the rate we are going, the earth will be depleted of resources. God is not against capitalism; Sustainable capitalism is the solution.

>>This begins with having the right approach to thinking: long-term and consequences/impact thinking.

According to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation:

Since 1970, we have lost one-third of the world’s wildlands, and in that time 50% of all vertebrate land animals have vanished. One-third of the world’s coral reefs, the “nurseries” of the ocean, have died and another third are expected to perish by 2030. Climate change is only adding fuel to the fire, with rapidly increasing global temperatures wreaking havoc on the delicate balance that has allowed life to flourish since the end of the last ice age. The situation in which we find ourselves is not just tragic for the thousands of species that will never again roam the Earth, but could threaten the very existence of our own species, homo sapiens.

More facts from the World Counts:

  • 27,000 trees are cut down each day so we can have Toilet Paper.
  • Aluminum can be recycled continuously, as in forever. Recycling 1 aluminum can save enough energy to run our TVs for at least 3 hours. 80 trillion aluminum cans are used by humans every year.
  • American companies alone use enough Paper to encircle the Earth 3x! (It’s a good thing that businesses are moving towards going paperless)
  • We can save 75,000 trees if we recycled the paper used on the daily run of the New York Times alone.
  • When you throw plastic bags and other plastic materials in the ocean, it kills as many as 1 million sea creatures annually.
  • A glass bottle made in our time will take more than 4,000 years to decompose.
  • Only 1% of our planet’s water supply can be used. 97% is ocean water and 2% is frozen solid in the Arctic, for now.
  • Our planet gains inhabitants numbering to 77 million people a year.
  • An estimated 50,000 species inhabiting our tropical forests become extinct annually. That’s an average of 137 species a day.
  • Rainforests are cut down at a rate of 100 acres per minute.
  • The world’s oldest trees are more than 4,600 years old.
  • Landfills are composed of 35% packaging materials.

I urge everyone to integrate “the environment” into your mindsets. “How would what I do or what I use affect the environment”? Our collective conscienceness and actions is the leverage to effect positive impact on the planet’s ecosystem; our home. No one else will take care of our home but us; what are you all waiting for?!
